Back by popular demand!
A dream and a boat. Those were the two main ingredients in a voyage that took a sailing couple around the world. Full Circle: A Sailing Journey is an exhibit of photos and paintings by Sally Whitbeck from the couple’s adventure. The images of people and places from across the globe allow the viewer to vicariously experience their voyage and see the world from a very personal perspective. The exhibit is back by popular demand at the Nuveen Community Center for the month of April.
Local couple, Jon and Sally Whitbeck, learned to sail on Lake Erie on a wooden 30-foot, 1939 Tahiti Ketch. In their early 20’s they cruised from Lake Erie to the Bahamas, and then up to Annapolis, Maryland, where they settled for the next 12 years. In 1993, they pulled up roots once again, and set out on their new home, a Tayana 37, to circle the globe. Their life-changing, 4 ½-year journey covered 33,000 miles and 33 countries, eventually bringing them back to Lake Erie where their sailing life had begun almost 20 years earlier.
After their voyage, the Whitbecks settled in Montague, where they could be “back home” in the Mid-West, but still be near boats and the water. They have an 8-year old daughter, Phoebe, and have started a new business, Duneshore Boating, which offers small boat rentals, yacht charters, and yacht brokerage.
Exhibit and Reception Dates
Full Circle: A Sailing Journey will be on exhibit at the Nuveen from April 6-29, with a reception and chance to meet the intrepid travelers on Thursday, April 22, from 5-7 p.m. Light refreshment will be provided at the reception, courtesy of Fretty’s Catering. A short video of their trip may also be viewed. Exhibit hours are Tuesday – Friday, 12 – 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Spring Break Arts Camp: World Art!
Students who are in town during spring break are invited to join Spring Break Arts Camp April 5-8 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Nuveen. The Full Circle exhibit will inspire students in their artistic travels, as they draw, paint, sculpt, and create art of the world. Spring break art camp is $25 ($20 for siblings) and is sponsored by Seaver’s Lawn Service.
